Multiple Exposure - Image Banks

In this photograph the black and white tones have been used so that the photographs that are being multiply exposed have more of a link. The woods can be seen inside the image of the dog which is a contrast as in an ordinary photograph the dog could be seen inside the woods. This type of dog is often associated with winter due to its long fur and in the image of the woods it looks as if it is snowing.

In this photograph the building seems quite oriental and the facial features of the model also have this appearance which connect the two images. Both are in black and white tones which also connect the photographs and make them linked.
This photo also has used black and white tones which gives the photo a negative and depressing appearance. The girls facial expression is also quite negative and connected with the woods suggests that she is lost or searching for something.
I don't like this photo as i feel the shapes of the trees make the photograph of the girl seem strange and misshapen. I also feel that the tree image is too strong and overrides the image of the girl.
This photograph is a very pretty eye-catching photograph due to the bright positive colours of the flowers on the profile almost silhouette of the woman. Overall the photo has a very feminine appearance.
I like this photograph because it gives the impression that this woman is thinking and looking up at the woods and sky. Because this photo is her head filed with the image of the woods it also indicates that this is what she is thinking about.

Personal Shoot 6 - Work Diary

I think this shoot went really well and really contrasted with all of my other food photography shoots as instead of making the food look enticing it looked slightly off putting but still made fairly attractive photographs. To improve this shoot I would use other foods that are unappealing like porridge or brightly coloured food in order to create attractive yet un-enticing photographs.
I think this photograph works really well as it is obvious that the photo is of an apple. It also works well because maggots are often found in apples and therefore this photograph illustrates this to the audience. To improve this I would just try and feather the photo a little more so that it was a bit softer.

I think this photo works really well because it is realistic and although the apple is shiny and attractive the maggots make it seem un-appealing and different from other food photography. To improve this photograph I would use more fruit in one photo to contrast with the apple or use a location setting and show it in a fruit bowl or something like that.

This shoot is a development from shoot four where I have chosen to create slightly controversial photography. I will develop this shoot by going on to using real maggots in order to get a more realistic and life like photograph. I will probably use video so that the movement, shapes and actions of the maggots can be seen.

Video - Work Diary

In this lesson I looked at using video for a photographical purpose rather than a media one. I think this lesson went well however it was difficult not to look at this technique in a non media way. It was also difficult to find things to photograph.
This video has worked well because it has no other purpose than to look attractive and interesting. To improve this I would make the photo brighter as it is quite dull and could stand out more.

I really like this video because it is attractive and the composition is very symmetrical and just generally an attractive video. Once again to improve I would brighten the colours up just to make the photo a bit more positive.

Multiple flash - technique

1. Set the shutter speed to bulb.
2. Work completely in darkness with a black background.
3. Use polystyrene boards to block all lighting.
4. Hold down the shutter button and flash the flash each time the model moves position.
5. Release the shutter button after movement has finished.

Slow Sync - Technique

1. Set up a black background.
2. Set up the red head so that it is behind a polystyrene wall protecting the background and have one that it also protects the camera.
3. Get the model to stand in front of the light and make the desired movement.
4. Change the camera to a long shutter speed and white balance.
5. set the camera to rear curtain sync.
6. take a light reading to make sure it is balanced.
7. Take the photograph.

Multiple Flash - My Photos

Mid Project Evaluation

So far I have really enjoyed this unit of work. I really like the topic of 'food' that I have chosen as I feel it gives me a very broad area to work with. Personal shoots are my favourite because there are s many different options for me to photograph and so much inspiration on the internet when I can't think of anything to do.
The techniques that I have found difficult so far are the studio techniques as there is quite a lot of technical things that need to be correct in order to get the technique to work as it should. So far I have been really organised with this unit which makes the whole process far more enjoyable as I know exactly what I am doing each lesson and have the things I need in order to get them done. To improve I would just ensure that I bring things to properly clear up after my shoots as food photography can be slightly messy depending on what I use.
I will also try and experiment more when it comes to editing as a few of my photos could be edited to make them a little more unique. I would like to progress into even more experiments with food for my personal project to make my photographs interesting and unique.

Personal Shoot 5 - Work Diary

In this lesson I decided to use a model in my shoot to make it differ from the rest of my shoots. I was trying to give the photos an old fashioned feel by using old fashioned clothing, hair and make up. I think this shoot went better than I expected it to however to improve this shoot i would experiment with a location rather than the studio.
I like this photograph because I have edited the photograph so that the colours are duller in order to give the photo a more old fashioned photo effect. To improve this photo I would try and learn how to give the photo a proper old fashioned effect. I would also try and work on the composition and facial expression.

This is my favourite photo from the shoot as the cake is the only thing in colour which makes it really stand out and entice the audience. It also looks old fashioned because of the clothing and the decoration and the whole photo centres around the cake. To improve this photo I would just make sure when i rub out the black and white I make sure I feather it so that the line where the colour and black and white meet is not so obvious.

Multiple Flash - Work Diary

In this lesson I looked at the technique of multiple flash. I enjoyed this technique although at first it was confusing to understand the process. Also the radio that controls te flash would not work so it had to be done manually by someone else which complicated it even further. I was pleased with the outcome of these photographs however it was fifficult to come up with origional poses and composition.

I was really pleased with the outcome of this photograph however I would try and get Sophie to keep her facial expression completely neutral in these photos so the focus is entirely on the use of multiple flash and the facial expression doesn't become more interesting to the audience. The composition of this photo works really well.

To improve this photograph I would make sure that the second version of Taylor is not as dark as it is in this photograph and I would keep her in exactly the same place so that she does not change size. Lastly I would ensure that her hand lines up in each photograph.

Slow Sync - Work Diary

In this lesson I looked at the technique of slow sync. This worked quite well however it was difficult to think of actions which ended with the model beig still. In order to improve these photographs I would research into this technique to get some more ideas of how to compose each photograph.
I was pleased with the outcome of this photograph because it shows the technique really well however to improve it I would come up with a more obvious movement or action just so that the photo has more of a purpose.

To improve this photograph I would make sure that Sophie's face gets some of the light as well as in this photograph her face is to dark and I would like it to be as obvious as Taylor's is.  I do however like the composition of this photograph.

Photographer three - Andy Grimshaw

I have chosen this photographer due to his unique style of composition and interesting photographs. With other food photographers it gets a little bit repetitive however with this photographer his work stands out due to the different background and choice of colours. I would like to use the composition of the photographs in order to influence my own work.

I really like this photograph because it really entices the audience because the strawberries appear as if they are sinking into a cream background. I also like how perfect the strawberries are with no flaws or defects. They are also laid out in an attractive way making a generally attractive photograph.

I early love this photograph and would like to try this out my self. What makes this photograph unique is the exact layout of each can which makes the photo seem as if everything is exactly the same except the contents of the can. It is also good because it has the bright red colour of the tin agains a plain white background. I also like the use of very faint reflection of the cans.

I love this photograph due to the completely plain background making the cabbage the only thing in the photograph. It also appears as if its floating as opposed to regular photos which would have the item laying down. I think the plain black background allows the audiences attention to be entirely drawn to the details of the cabbage.

What I think makes this an interesting photograph is the use of the background that is a zoomed in photograph of the main focal point. You would expect that having a green bottle on a green background would make it blend in however the use of the lighting coming of of the bottle this is not an issue and the outline of the bottle is obvious.

Influence - I will take influence from the black backgrounds used in this photographers work as I feel it makes his work stand out and makes it really different to the work of other photographers.
This photograph shows how I have taken influence from the bottom photo from this photographer as I have chosen to use a feature from the object of the photo and zoomed in to create a background for the photograph. In the photographers work he has zoomed right into the label of the bottle whereas in my work I zoomed into a Malteaser and repeated the image creating a background for the packet.
Summary - Over all I like this photographers work as it is very unique and eye-catching. I also like his use of commercial items such as the tins and bottle as these make very interesting attractive photographs.

Personal shoot 4 - Work diary

In this shoot I was using melted chocolate and chillies to create interesting and unique photographs.  think this went really well and I was very pleased with the results of my photographs and this has been one of my favourite shoots so far. What worked really well was the lighting s it reflected of of the different colours of the chocolate.

This is my favourite photograph from the shoot as I love how clear the difference in colour of each chocolate is and how they shine under the lighting. I also like the angle of the canvas as I think it gives the photograph depth and makes it very attractive. I also like how the chocolate has dripped down the side of the canvas as it shows the consistency of the chocolate.

Once again I really like this photograph as I like how the colour and taste of the chilli and chocolate contrast with each other and generally make an attractive photograph. The only thing that I would improve on this photograph is the background as I would like it to be whiter instead of cream.

In this shoot I have chosen to use foods that seem to contrast in order to create a more controversial photograph. I may go on to do this in other shoots by showing the bad side of food as well as the good.

These photographs are all a development of the idea of controversial photography.
